ARCHER & BUCHANAN

ARCHITECTURE

INTERNSHIP: 2023-2025

After working for two years at RLPS and accepting admission into grad school at Penn State, I decided I could use the next two years to gain experience at a different firm than RLPS. I wanted to find a firm that worked on project types that differed from my previous experience, and one that was a different size company than I was used to.

Archer & Buchanan offered everything I was looking for. It was a company that focused on the residential side of the field as opposed to commercial, and hosted a firm of around 30 people compared to the 90+ that I had been exposed to. As an office who had only started using Revit on select projects, I had more Revit experience than most of the full-time staff in the office coming into this internship. Because of this, not only did I help the firm's Revit users in adopting a more robust Revit library, but I was also placed on the largest project in the office - a ~25,000 sqft new home in Delaware county, meant to resemble an early 19th century French chateau estate. In contrast to my previous experience, the project type, clientele, and deliverables had changed immediately.

In addition to this immediate project change, I also had the opportunity to assist project teams on restoration and preservation projects, new additions, and other new homes. In the fashion of the firm, all of these projects respected the rules of 'classic' architecture - whether Colonial, Georgian, Federal, etc.

Interning here for multiple sessions provided me the opportunity to see some of these projects get built, and even years later, I've been included on some site visits to get to see some of my designs come to life. At a smaller-medium sized firm, I had more design responsibilities as an intern, and it has been extremely rewarding to see some of my first real-world designs come to life. See my home page for an in-depth view of some of those projects, and above for some of the other projects I've worked on and created renderings for.
