During the research phase of our thesis projects, students are required to take a Direct Research Studio. The theme of these studios is defined by the professor, and are often smaller scale projects as professors understand that students are neck-deep in research for their thesis projects.

Each student is given a studio of their choice all a variety of topics, and I chose the studio that focused on the idea of bringing the farm back to the town. Some students took this as an idea to transform a part of State College, PA into an agri-based community, but I saw the potential of bringing the farm into the town not only through its architectural language, but in the idea that farms are maintained through the hands of men and women.

In a digital world, there are many people that rely on technology to fulfill their lives and are out of touch when it comes to creating with their minds, translating that to their hands, and physically making something that they can pick up. As someone who is an automotive hobbyist, I am grateful that I have been exposed to the dying art of automotive restoration as others have not.

Inspired by the barns, horse stables, and carriage houses of the 19th and 20th centuries, this project is able to give back to the community by teaching the public this dying art - to persuade them to get their hands dirty and create. This is a place where everyone else has the opportunity to receive what my uncle and father gave me - the craft of this dying art.
