SPRING 2021
Every year, the junior class is responsible for creating fully functional cardboard chairs. These chairs must be designed and built by a group of three students, and the corrugated cardboard must be held together without the use of adhesives. So, for the last project of Design Studio V, students were given one week to design and construct their chair. These chairs would eventually be displayed in the halls leading to the architecture studios.

My group wanted to have a free-flowing form that fit the contour of a body well, but we also wanted to tie the architecture of the chair into the architecture of a building. To do this, my group created an upright lounge chair that was comfort-fitting and decorated with exterior pieces. The exterior pieces were meant to resemble how some buildings use an exoskeleton structure.

The 77 pieces of carboard were cut with a jigsaw, drilled with a hole saw, and assembled with 1.25" poplar dowels. My group and I really enjoyed this project as it's something we've looked forward to making since we were freshmen, our team worked well together, and we were satisfied with the results.

Above are a few images of our design solution, as well as the process of creating our chair.
